Music and Radio Assignment 2 – Report – Demo Two


Our second demo is a specialist drum and bass station called Buzz FM and the target listeners for Buzz FM are young adults aged 18-25 male or female that love to listen to drum and bass. They would be someone that likes to party a lot and loves the ‘rave’ kind of atmosphere. We chose to a specialist format because it gave us the chance to do a drum and bass station which was of particular interest within our group. We chose drum and bass because it is becoming quite a popular genre among young adults now a days, it is what a lot of them like to listen to. I took on the job role of program controller for this demo because I wanted to have sort of an organizing role and a role where I would be getting everything in order and doing more of the ‘behind the scenes’ jobs rather than presenting or news reading roles. I took this role because with this role you are kind of in charge of everything and in charge of keeping everyone else in the group on task.

Our ideas for this demo really fit the target listener and there needs because they are people that like to go out and have fun, party a lot and listen to a lot of drum and bass music and our speech content is about music gigs, ‘raves’ and festivals so it is really suited to our target listeners and their needs. Our music choices will probably include artists like Skrillex so they will be really suited for our target listeners.

Comparing our two radio demos, the first demo is a CHR station that plays a range of different chart hits whereas our second demo is a specialist drum and bass station. The two demos play different types of music and have very different vibes. The presenters in our drum and bass demo are very loud and out going and are over the top, their personalities reflect the music they play. The presenters in our CHR station are also out going but are not as dramatic or over the top. The presenters personalities are a little mellower than the drum and bass presenters and they are very chatty and bubbly. Our two demos also have fairly different audiences and audience needs. Both demos target listeners are young adults ages 18-25 male or female that like to go out, have a good time and listen to lots of music. However, our drum and bass target listeners are a little more outgoing and like to listen to drum and bass music specifically and our CHR station target listeners listen to a range of different chart hits music.

Assignment 2 Report - Demo One CHR




Our first demo is a CHR station called Solar FM and the target listeners for Solar FM is a young adult 18-25 male or female and would be someone that loves to listen to all the new music and likes to know about all the celebrity gossip. We chose this format because it plays a lot of different genre music and is appealing to male or females. The music played is young and popular.  I took on the job role of News/Sports/Travel for demo one and decided to talk about  basic news and information with a little bit of celeb gossip. I also decided to talk about the travel updates and a small part about the days weather. I took on this job role because it is a speaking part but it is not the big main speaking part of the presenter so it isn’t that bad or heavy loaded.

All of our ideas for the show really fit the needs of our listener, our ideas are aimed at young adults aged 18-25 that like to go out, listen to lots of music and socialise and that is exactly what our listeners need. They need a station that is going to play new and upcoming music to keep them ‘alive’ have adverts about things that they enjoy and that are relevant to them such as club promotions and car insurance as they are all at the age where they go out clubbing a lot and are all at the age where they are normally buying their first cars so insurance adverts are definitely relevant to them. We will talk about things like celebs and celeb gossip and local gigs which will interest our target listeners as they love to listen to music and feel alive and hearing about gigs and concerts will be good for them. We will play music like Jessie J – Domino and Rizzle Kicks – Mama Do The Hump. This will play to our listeners needs because they love to listen to a range of different genre music and new and upcoming chart hits so these two new chart songs from different genres will be good choices for our target listeners.  

If I were to compare this demo to an existing station currently broadcasting in the CHR format, it would be Capital because Capital has a very similar target listener; they also play a range of different genre music and new chart hits. The presenters are very like how our presenters will be and are very chatty and bubbly. Capital talk about the same kinds of things as we will in our demo for example celebrity gossip and celebs lives, local news, concerts and gigs. All in all, our station is very similar to capital in many aspects but ours is a lot more based around music and less speech content that Capital.

Demo One - CHR - Solar FM



Station Description and Target Listeners:


Solar FM is a Contemporary Hit Radio Station that plays a variety of new chart hits. The station talks about a lot of celeb gossip.

The target listener for Solar FM is a young adult 18-25 male or female and would be someone that loves to listen to all the new music and likes to know about all the celebrity gossip.

Some of the ideas for the speech content will be to talk about celebrity gossip for example, how Little Mix have been getting on since winning the X-Factor last month, all the news and gossip about Beyonce and Jay-Z’s new baby, all the get-togethers and break-ups of celebrity couples.      

We’ve come up with a few ideas for the music content for Solar FM, such as Jessie J – Domino, Rizzle Kicks – Mama Do The Hump and Beyonce – Love On Top.

Some of our ideas for adverts include cheap entry nights at Tiger Tiger, because our target listeners are young and enjoy going out quite a lot. Car insurance adverts because a lot of our target listeners will be getting their first cars and these insurance adverts will be appropriate for them.

Some ideas for information (news and travel) will just be the traditional daily news and the travel update for people on the roads. We may also talk a little about the days weather.
