Radio Formats

Contemporary Hit Radio – this radio format plays a lot of current and recurrent popular music, normally from the Top 40 music charts.

AC – this radio format plays lively contemporary music of the last decade or two without cutting edge music, rock or rap music.

Specialist – this radio format delivers content to a specific audience for example ‘Soul Guy Radio’ is a soul specialist radio station.

Community Radio – this radio format delivers content to a local or a specific audience and is owned, operated and driven by the communities they serve.

Gold Radio – this radio format plays older music like the greatest hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Listeners Needs

Radio stations need to connect with their listeners and their listeners needs. How a radio station makes a listener feel is very important and different radio stations make their listeners feel different ways.

Some radio stations make their listeners feel comforted – it makes them feel safe and allows them to get involved through ‘phone-ins’ and quizzes. They are never alone and the presenters and the radio station are their friends.

Some radio stations make their listeners feel chilled out – the radio stations keeps them relaxed and helps them unwind. It makes them feel ‘at home’.

Some radio stations make their listeners feel informed – it lets them know what is going on in the world, from local to national news or events. It gives them something to talk about to their friends.

Some radio stations make their listeners feel alive – it keeps them motivated and engaged and provides the theme tune to their life. It wakes them up, entertains and informs them throughout the day.

Assignment One

(Improvements made are in bold and underlined)

New Community Radio Station

The name of this new community radio station is Alive FM.

The target listener for Alive FM would be under 25s, male or female. I think the target listener would also be someone that loves to party! Alive FM is for the under 25s and specifically plays new chart hits, whatever the genre. It plays the new music thats out and also quite a lot of dance music. Alive FM is 'alive' itself and plays quite a lot of music, although it is also fairly 'chilled out' and makes the listeners feel at home. Alive FM plays the new music that the listeners want to hear!

Competition for this new radio station would be Capital because Capital is also local and it also plays a lot of the same music - new chart hits. Capital fulfill their listeners needs because they play a lot of dance music and is are an 'alive' radio station. They are a very informal and friendly radio station they are quite loud and chatty. I took some time out to listen to Capital myself and listened to some of the songs they were playing and some of the subjects they were talking about. Some of the songs played were Example - Stay Awake, The Wanted - Lightening, Jason Derulo - It Girl, Loick Essien - Me Without You and LS - Take A Chance On Me. Some of the topics talked about on the show by the presenters Zoe and Gillies were news stories and what's going on in the world. They also had general chit chats between them and talked about the latest gossip from the biggest artists. By listening to Capital myself i know that Capital really fulfill their listeners needs because they play lots of chart music and are really alive and 'kicking'.

Another competition station would Express FM because they are another Community Radio Station. Express FM serve their listeners needs by playing a range of songs from different times and different genres, play a bit of everything. I think it would be appealing to my listeners because they do play a lot of new chart songs and are also quite an 'alive' radio station which is very appealing to my target listeners. Express FM also serve their listeners needs by informing locals of local news and events. I also took some time to listen to Express FM myself and i got to hear some of the songs they play and listen to what they talk about. Some of the songs they played were: Ed Sheeran - Lego House, Bruno Mars - It Will Rain and Beyonce - Love On Top.
On express, the presenters also talked about a variety of different things and had a guest named Anna Howell join them and they talked a lot about the world of 'Soaps'. Express serve their listeners needs because they are a local station that aren't like the typical popular chart hit stations, they talk about local things, play different music and are comforting for their listeners.

One more competition station i think would be Radio One because the typical audience for Radio One is under 25s as well and Radio One is an 'alive' radio station and tends to play the newest music out, just like Alive FM. Radio One currently serve their listeners needs by being a very chatty and informal radio station and by playing a lot of current chart hits. I listened to Radio one myself and there were a range of topics discussed, a range of new chart hit songs played and a lot of humor and the station was very 'alive'. Some of the songs played were Labrinth - Earthquake, David Guetta - Without You, Pixie Lott - What Do You Take Me For and Olly Murs - Dance With Me Tonight. On the Chris Moyles Breakfast Show that i listened to, they played a game called 'Carpark Catchphrase' which was very amusing to listen to becuase there are two listeners that go head to head and are in a race to answer the question and beep their horn first and some get very competative which is amusing. There was also a guest on the show, Gino D'Acampo who they talked to about his life and things that are going on at the moment. By listening to Radio one myself, i know that Radio One really serves their listeners needs because lots of new chart music was played and the station was very upbeat and felt like it 'got me up and going' in the morning.

A radio station that i think would not be any competition for this new community station would be Heart. This is because Heart's audience is based at the over 35s and Heart plays a lot of older music such as the 70s and 80s. Although Heart does play some newer chart music sometimes, I don't think a listener of this new community radio station targeted at the under 25s and playing all new chart music and dance music, would want to listen to Heart so Heart is not considered as competition. i took a chance to listen to Heart and realized that they do serve their listeners needs, they play a range of different music and really comfort their listeners. They aren't just the typical popular chart hit radio station either. When i listened to Heart they played songs like Bryan Adams - Heaven and Bangles - Eternal Flame. These songs are really appealing to Hearts listeners becuase they are from around the 80's and they are the kinds of songs that their target listeners of females over 35 like to listen to. When i listened to the show, they also talked about a section in the show called Time Tunnel Memories, this is when listeners get the chance to contact the show and share their fondest memories. This is appealing to Hearts listeners becuase it is comforting for them and the listeners are typically over the age of 35 so will have a lot more memories than somebody that is 18. I dont think any of the songs played or any of the things talked about on heart would be appealing to my listeners because they like something that is more alive and not as mellow as heart, they like new chart music and something a bit more 'fresh'.
